What Does a Biennium Mean…and Why Should I Care?

If you’ve heard the word biennium and wondered what everyone is talking about, you’re not alone. It isn’t a word most of us use every day.

Simply put, a biennium is a two-year licensing period.

  • For Wisconsin real estate licensees, each biennium begins on December 15 of an even-numbered year and ends on December 14 two years later.
  • The current biennium is December 15, 2024, through December 14, 2026.
  • During that two-year period, Wisconsin real estate licensees must complete 18 hours of approved continuing education before renewing their licenses.

Why should you care?

Because your real estate license expires on December 14 of every even-numbered year. (After December 14, you cannot legally practice real estate until your license has been properly renewed.)

  • The good news is that you don’t have to wait until the last minute to complete your continuing education.
  • Some licensees complete all 18 hours as soon as courses become available in the spring of the odd-numbered year. Others spread their courses out over two years. Many wait until the second year of the biennium.
  • There isn’t a “right” way to do it.
  • The important thing is that all required continuing education is completed before you renew your license.

Personally, I recommend finishing early. It eliminates the stress of trying to squeeze in courses during the busy renewal season, and it gives you one less thing to think about as the December deadline approaches.
